Protect Their Future Applauds FDA Advisors to Authorize Vaccines for Children Under Five
June 15, 2022— Protect Their Future applauds the FDA advisors’ vote in favor of authorization for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for both Moderna and Pfizer Covid vaccines for children under 5. After a long wait, millions of families will finally have access to vaccine protection for their youngest. This milestone comes after thousands of families advocated for children and called on our public health leaders to treat our children with the same urgency that they did for older age groups.
“As we celebrate the fact that our youngest population will finally be able to access COVID vaccines, we continue to ask our leaders to cut the bureaucratic tape that has been creating barriers for children,” said Protect Their Future Cofounder Dr. Kate Matthias. “We must learn from this experience and recognize that the struggle doesn’t stop with shots in arms. As COVID boosters and therapeutics continue to be developed, children must not be left behind again.”
After the EUA, it will also be critical to ensure that the vaccines are made widely available and easy to access for families across the country. We must continue to correct any misinformation which exists and amplify voices that are educating the public on the existing data, which clearly shows the safety and efficacy of these vaccines. It is our hope that these vaccines will be a significant part of what protects children as we enter a new school year and as new COVID variants continue to appear.

We are a grassroots group of physicians, parents and activists advocating on behalf of our young children and patients to have access to COVID-19 vaccines as the pandemic rages on. As parents, we have waited patiently for our kids to be protected while the rest of the country seems to have put the pandemic behind them. Omicron is the most infectious of all variants to date and early reports are showing potential increased hospitalization in children under 5. With nearly 6,000 cases of MIS-C in children and 1,000 kids who have died of COVID-19 kids under 18, we need to do all we can as parents to protect our children. We currently have the data and science, but bureaucratic and procedural red tape is leaving young children unprotected. We need that to change. We need the FDA and regulatory agencies to PUT KIDS FIRST and allow parents the option to protect their children with a safe and effective vaccine.
